Pouring and transferring

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think”

-Margaret Mead

Pouring and transferring dry produce (beans) or liquids (water) is a vital part of the Practical Life curriculum.  Grasping a handle and pouring water helps children develop fine motor control.  These simple activities isolate single skills children will later need, in combination with other muscles, for more complex processes.

There are 2 versions of pouring, dry or wet.  Transferring is the use of tongs to lift small items i.e. beads from a bowl to a plate.  This latter activity improves the “pincer grip” required for handwriting skills.
