The Infant or Nido phase comprises the environment from birth to approximately 18 months. An infant (from the Latin word infans, meaning “unable to speak” or “speechless”) is the more formal or specialised synonym for “baby”; the very young offspring of a human.
A Montessori classroom for infants, sometimes referred to as “The Nido” (Italian for “nest”). This class accommodates non-mobile or crawling infants in a peaceful classroom environment.
