“Sometimes very small children in a proper environment develop a skill and exactness in their work that can only surprise us.” Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, pg 257
Linear and skip counting introduces the concept of ‘grouping’ numerals together. This material is only presented to the Child after they have mastered the early math and counting materials.
The objective is for the Child to memorize the multiplication tables using the short and long chains of golden bead material. These bead chains, together with numbered arrows, teach the Child how to ‘skip count’. The Child groups sets of numbers together with the same materials. Then they multiply (or adds) the groups of numbers forming the basis of multiplication or addition.
