Description
Homographs; two or more words that are spelt the same, but do not mean the same. These words are generally pronounced the same way, but may, on occasion, sound different from each other. The origins and meanings of these words will differ. For example – desert – can mean a dry, arid land-mass or the desert you select for something sweet to eat after your main meal.
Learning homographs and homophones helps children understand the context of sentences, i.e. that words can have more than one meaning. Mastering this function of grammar, improves their vocabulary, reading skills and helps them read with comprehension.
