The Imbucare Box with Small Cylinder is an advanced coordination material typically introduced to infants and toddlers between 8 and 24 months. It serves as a bridge between the beginner “ball” boxes and the more complex “angled” shape boxes (like the cube or prism).
While a ball can roll into a hole regardless of its orientation, a cylinder requires the Child to realize that the object must be held vertically to pass through the circular opening.

Fine Motor Precision: Because the cylinder is “small,” it requires a more delicate pincer grasp (using the tips of the fingers) rather than the “palmar grasp” (whole hand) used for larger balls.
Wrist Control: To succeed, the Child must rotate their wrist so the cylinder is perfectly upright. This “vertical posting” is a significant developmental milestone in hand-eye coordination.
Advanced Object Permanence: Like other Imbucare boxes, it reinforces that the cylinder exists even when it is hidden inside the box.
The Grip: The Child picks up the small wooden cylinder (often painted bright red in traditional sets).
The Alignment: The Child moves the cylinder over the hole. If they try to push it in sideways, it won’t fit. They must adjust their grip to align the circular end with the opening.
The Action: The cylinder is “posted” into the box.
The Retrieval: The Child opens the hinged door to retrieve the cylinder. This added step of “opening” introduces a secondary motor skill.
Many Montessori environments offer both a Large and a Small Cylinder box. The transition between them is intentional:
Large Cylinder: Easier to grasp with the whole hand; the hole is wider and more forgiving.
Small Cylinder: Requires more “steadiness” and precise finger work; the smaller target makes the task more challenging for the Child’s developing vision and motor control.
