Description
Between 3.5 and 4 years of age, the Child is presented with a new sensorial activity; that of the colourful Binomial Cube. Initially, this may appear to be a challenge to young children, however, the recognised method of teaching the activity is through deconstruction and reconstructing it. Traditionally, the control found on the lid of the box was the only control. To aid the Guide and the Child, we present an extension to this core material, a Binomial Cube Placement Mat. This mat is an additional control, as well as a work-space and a guide to understand how to reconstruct the cube.
The purpose of the binomial cube placement mat, is not to teach mathematics, but to challenge the child to find patterns and spatial relationships. It is best to think of these as three-dimensional puzzles. Indirectly, the Child is being prepared for the mathematical formula (a + b)³ = (a + b) (a + b) (a + b) = a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³.
