Description
Key Purposes & Benefits
-
Spatial Relationship: The Child learns that for an object to fit, the volume of the object must match the volume of the hole.
-
Proprioceptive Feedback: Pushing the object into a snug “home” provides feedback to the joints and muscles, helping the child understand how much force is needed.
-
Visual Discrimination of Form: The Child must distinguish between the “roundness” of a sphere and the “edges” of a cube.
The Typical Set
A standard 3D Object Fitting set consists of:
-
The Egg in Cup: (Easiest) The egg is curved and fits into the cup at almost any angle.
-
The Sphere in Bowl: Similar to the egg, but focuses on a perfect round shape.
-
The Cube in Box: (Intermediate) Introduces corners; the child must align the square faces of the cube with the square opening.
How it is Used
-
Presentation: The Guide places one block (e.g., the Egg in Cup) in front of the child.
-
The Removal: The Guide lifts the egg out, and places it on the mat.
-
The Exploration: The Guide may run their finger around the rim of the cup and the surface of the egg to show they match.
-
The Replacement: The egg is placed back into the cup.
-
Independence: The Child is invited to repeat the process. Once one is mastered, a second block is introduced to allow for a choice.
Why this precedes “Puzzles”
The 3D Object Fitting exercise is easier than a 2D puzzle because:
-
The “Home” is deep: The object stays put once it is even partially in the hole.
-
The Shape is Graspable: The child can feel the entire 3D form, which provides more sensory information than a flat puzzle piece.
-
Isolation: Usually, these are presented as individual blocks first, so the child isn’t distracted by other holes or shapes.
