Description
Use the 20ml large amber glass medicine dropper for fun, like making weirdly colored pictures and (more importantly), to improve the fine motor skills in the hands.
Functions: Using the dropper helps to –
- isolate the fine muscles that fingers use for writing
- strengthen the muscles in small hands
- practicing this activity improves coordination, control and patience
- all these functions are important to learn how to write.
We have listed 2 exercises (below), but if you wish to learn more about the Montessori practical life activities, we recommend Teaching Montessori in the Home: The Pre-School Years by Elizabeth G. Hainstock.
Exercise 1) Decant a little water into an ice tray. Add a 2 or 3 drops of oil and various food colorings, to the water in the tray. Use the 20ml amber glass medicine dropper to transfer colored water, onto a piece of paper, to make different shapes and to mix colors.
Exercise 2) Drop droplets of colored water onto a cotton wool ball and see how quickly it is absorbed.
