Description
Key Purposes & Benefits
-
Advanced Visual Discrimination: The Child learns to recognize that a shape has specific dimensions and must be oriented a certain way to “disappear” into the hole.
-
Refined Fine Motor Control: Unlike a round ball, the prism requires a more precise grip and a “wrist rotation” movement to match the hole’s orientation.
-
Problem Solving: If the prism is held horizontally against a vertical slot, it won’t fit. The Child must rotate the object until the shapes match; an early introduction to geometry.
-
Sustained Concentration: Because it is more difficult than the ball-drop boxes, it encourages a deeper level of focus and repeated attempts.
How it is Used
-
Grasp: The Child picks up the wooden rectangular prism (usually colored green in traditional Montessori sets).
-
Orientation: They bring the prism to the top of the box and attempt to “post” it.
-
The Reveal: Once the prism is successfully dropped through the hole, it disappears from sight.
-
Retrieval: The child then opens the hinged door to find the prism and begin the process again.
