Description
Did you know that crabs have 10 legs, but two of them; the big ones on either side of their head; are not actually legs, but chelipeds or pincers? Even more interesting, is the fact that male crabs often have blue coloured pincers (also known as claws), and females have red coloured pincers, making it look as if they have nail varnish on them. The Parts of a Crab Activity, provides the Child with the correct terminology for the seven main parts making up the crab, and includes many interesting facts.
There are over 8,700 million species globally; according to the National Geographic; but they are susceptible to environmental changes, and their numbers are dwindling. Crabs feed on almost anything, and also help to ‘cleanse’ the bottom of the ocean from dead, and decaying matter.
Based upon the Montessori zoological curriculum, crabs belong to the Arthropoda phylum, and the material is colour-coded with a yellow border around each card. Combining the simplicity of a 3-part cards set, a booklet; that comprehensively covers detailed descriptions about crabs; and definition cards. It is aimed at both the 3 to 6, and the 6 to 9 environments.
