Description
Key Features and Purpose
-
Increasing Challenges: It moves the Child from a “passive” discovery (watching the ball roll out) to an “active” discovery (searching for the ball).
-
Advanced Motor Skills: To retrieve the ball, the child must use a pincer or palmar grasp to pull the small knob on the drawer, which further refines fine motor coordination.
-
Working Memory: The Child must remember that the ball is inside the box even though it is completely hidden and doesn’t immediately reappear.
How it Differs from the Tray Version
| Feature | Tray Version | Drawer Version |
| Visibility | Ball is visible once it rolls out. | Ball remains hidden until the drawer is opened. |
| Complexity | One-step process (Drop). | Two-step process (Drop + Pull). |
| Goal | Introduction to object permanence. | Mastery of object permanence and problem-solving. |
The Object Permanence Box with Drawer is the logical next step after a child has mastered the version with the tray. It is typically introduced to toddlers between 11 and 15 months of age.
While the tray version allows the ball to roll back automatically, the drawer version adds a layer of complexity by requiring the child to perform a deliberate action to find the “missing” object.

The Presentation
-
The Drop: The Guide slowly drops the ball into the hole on top of the box. The ball makes a “thud” as it hits the bottom, signaling it is still there.
-
The Search: The Guide pauses, looks at the box with curiosity, and then slowly reaches for the knob.
-
The Reveal: The drawer is pulled open to reveal the ball inside.
-
The Reset: The ball is taken out, the drawer is pushed back in, and the Child is invited to take a turn.
Control of Error
Like all Montessori materials, the “Control of Error” is built-in. If the Child drops the ball and doesn’t open the drawer, they cannot continue the activity because the ball is gone. They must figure out how to open the box to retrieve their toy and start again.
