Description
All living things go through a variety of changes throughout their life time. These miniature objects describe the Life Cycle of a Salmon.
Salmon spend their entire life in the ocean, but migrate to rivers and streams to spawn. Salmon eggs are laid in gravel beds at the bottom of streams and lakes, hatching within 2 – 3 months. Alevins are a newly spawned salmon that carry a bright orange sac, which is the nutritive yolk. For nearly 3 – 4 months, the newly hatched alevins reside in the gravel nest, feeding on the yolk that hangs below their body. The parr develop distinguishable markings, which act as camouflage to help them avoid predators. They feed and grow in the freshwater streams for approximately 1 – 3 years, before they begin their journey towards the ocean. When the adult Salmon reaches the salt water of the ocean, they turn silver in colour. When the Salmon is old enough they lay their eggs in fresh water, and Salmon change color to attract a spawning mate. They use all their energy for returning to their home stream, for making eggs, and digging the nest. Most of them stop eating when they return to freshwater and have no energy left for a return trip to the ocean after spawning. After they die, they decompose, adding nutrients to the stream.
