Description
Key Purposes & Benefits
-
Color Recognition and Discrimination: The Child learns to identify and name primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and distinguish them from one another.
-
Logical Association (Matching): This is one of the Child’s first experiences with “one-to-one correspondence”, pairing an object (the disc) with its specific base (the dowel) based on a shared attribute.
-
Order and Organization: The material encourages the Child to categorize their environment. Instead of stacking randomly, they learn to create an organized, color-coded structure.
-
Visual-Motor Integration: The Child must visually scan the discs, select the correct one, and then execute the physical movement required to place it on the corresponding peg.
Structural Design
The set typically features a single wooden base with three vertical pegs.
-
The Pegs: Each peg is painted a different color (one red, one blue, one yellow).
-
The Discs: There are three discs that match the colors of the pegs exactly.
-
Control of Error: The visual disharmony provides the “control of error.” If a blue disc is placed on a red peg, the Child can see that the colors do not “match,” prompting them to self-correct without adult interference.
How to Present the Material
-
Preparation: Place the base in front of the Child and remove all the discs, placing them randomly on the left side of the base.
-
The Match: Pick up one disc (e.g., red). Point to the red disc, then point to the red dowel. Say clearly, “Red.”
-
The Action: Slowly thread the red disc onto the red dowel.
-
Completion: Repeat for the other two colors. Once finished, pause to admire the completed work before inviting the Child to try.
Progression of Difficulty
In a Montessori environment, matching usually follows a specific order:
-
Identical Matching: Matching two identical objects (like two red discs).
-
Color to Base Matching: Matching a colored object to a colored base (this material).
-
Abstract Matching: Matching a colored object to a color card or picture.
Contents
The set contains nine colored discs (3 red, 3 blue, 3 yellow) and a corresponding base with three vertical dowels.
The Base is manufactured in birchply, and the discs in solid beechwood.
