Description
Children learn by feeling things; through the look, touch, smell and (possibly) taste of an object. They absorb a mental understanding of what they “see”. This is concrete thinking, an age-appropriate mental activity that is necessary to progress to abstract thinking. After working with many concrete activities, around the age of 3 to 6, the Child is ready to move to the abstract, such as these “What Does Not Belong?” cards.
These beautiful photographs, full of colour and vitality, are very attractive to children. They will spend many minutes studying the details of each image. Each card increases in level of complexity, making it less obvious as to which image is different from the other three. The direct objective of this activity is to develop the sense of variation; a necessary aspect of learning. The indirect objective is laying the foundation for mathematics, language and writing.
In the past, we used to talk about “readiness skills” for school. We now talk about, pre-literacy skills. Children who work with specific early activities, find it easier to learn how to read. Pre-literacy defines the Childs level of skill to recognise letters, numbers and shapes. The “What Does Not Belong?” activity cards fall into this category.
