Description
Maria Montessori developed The Metal Insets over the years. She spent hours observing the children tracing designs to refine this activity.
Working with the Metal Insets teaches children to develop their pencil grip. This refines their fine motor skills, teaching them how to draw within an outline. The shape forms the material’s control of error. The Metal Insets indirectly allow children to practice concentration and order as they work with, and master, the material.
The hand and finger movements required to trace all these shapes are aligned to all the movements that The Child must do to develop their pincer grip and skill of writing. It is essential that The Child develops the correct pincer grip. If they use the 3-sided pencils (available separately), this grip comes to them automatically.

(As) “a child in a Montessori classroom learns to control a pencil by filling in outlines. An activity that does not (tire) him because he enjoys it. To make the outline, he uses equipment known as the Metal Insets. Each inset represents a different geometric shape. After selecting a figure and tracing it on paper, the child fills in the outline with a colored pencil of his own choosing.” A Parents’ Guide to the Montessori Classroom by Aline D. Wolf, page 32,

The metal shapes are smooth and fit in the insets perfectly. The stands are also perfectly slanted to display on the shelf.
