Description

Every Child who sees the beautifully curated preposition box, that looks like a gift; cannot wait for the day when they will be allowed to open it and work with the material.  The function of a preposition is to link nouns, pronouns, verbs and phrases to other words in a sentence.  For example a preposition is one or more words to describe where something is, when it will happen or how it is done.  These words have no set format.  The most common, are one-word prepositions, however, there are two or three word phrases, known as complex prepositions.

Contents of the Preposition Box

• 1 miniature butterfly – 3.5cm x 3.5cm / (1¼” x 1¼”)
• 2 white (article) word cards, displaying the words ‘the’ and ‘The’
• 2 black (noun) word cards, displaying the words ‘butterfly’ and ‘box’
• 1 red (verb) word card, displaying the word ‘is’
• 12 green (preposition) one-word cards
• 2 green (complex preposition) two- and three-word cards
• 1 x gift box – 8cm x 5cm x 2.5cm / (3″ x 2″ x 1″)

Activities for the Child/ren

• The ‘I Say’ Game –
  • split the children into pairs
  • 1 Child lays out the cards on a working mat, to make a sentence
  • the 2nd Child, reads the sentence and enacts the action, i.e. ‘The butterfly is in front of the box’
• The ‘Hide and Seek’ Game – will require the use of additional noun and verb word cards
  • split the children into pairs
  • 1 Child uses the cards to make a sentence, indicating an action, i.e. ‘The box is underneath the table’
  • this 1st Child must then move or hide the relevant object, while the 2nd Child closes their eyes
  • the 2nd Child, reads the sentence then goes to find the box that was hidden underneath the table.
