Description
The origins of flags are uncertain. How, why or who began the tradition of flying flags, is unknown. However, it is thought that the founder of the Zhou Dynasty in China (1046 to 256 BCE) was the first recorded source of a leader going into battle, flying their flag to demand respect. The fall of the flag meant defeat and the king would rarely expose himself together, with his flag. The flag was a substitute for the king and entrusted to a General.
