Indoor or Outdoor Thermometer

A large plastic thermometer, that can be hung either inside, or outside the classroom.  The temperatures are displayed in either Celsius (Centigrade) or Fahrenheit, on either side of the mercury strip between them.  The ranges are from (minus) -40° to either 50°C or 120°F.  The freezing point for either measurement is clearly indicated.

Description

Studying the thermometer is a way to introduce the climate, and other related subjects.  The best way to introduce these subjects is through the use of this large indoor, or outdoor thermometer.  Designated Child/ren can record both temperatures daily, which will initiate a lot of discussions –

  • What are the two different measurements?
  • Why is there a difference?
  • What can we do with the measurements?
  • Did we expect to see a difference?
  • What can we do to control the temperature?

Some of the answers the children give, may surprise the teacher.  Introducing mathematics, science, and other curricula; as suggested in the Rain Gauge activity, will also enhance this one.
