Description
The Equivalent Figure Material activity, helps elementary students understand that any two objects of the same size, occupying the same space, but with different shapes, can be equivalent. This leads to the discovery of area.
Objectives of the Equivalent Figure Material
- The direct objective:
- to understand; that shapes can be divided, and rearranged to create new shapes; and still retain the original area
- Indirectly, they learn:
- problem solving, and critical thinking skills
- that through visual discrimination, they can learn how to manipulate a shape into a new shape
- they improve their fine motor skills by manipulating the shapes
