Description
The fifth step in the Child’s understanding of time is the introduction of the Clock Activity – Five Minute. By this stage, the Child no longer requires the assistance of the fraction circle, but an alternative option is for the teacher to make use of the bead stair of 5.
How to Present this activity:
By now, the Child has a strong sensorial concept of time. This step requires them to understand that one hour is made up of 12 chunks of 5 mins each, i.e. this is best suited to presentation after the Child has been introduced to division, but has learnt to count to 60.
Features of the Clock Activity – Five Minute set for one :
- Control cards (144), each one displaying an analog clock-face with a different five minute past the hourly o’clock time; and labelled (in words), for the displayed time.
- Mute cards (144) displaying the analog clock-face only. Each card reflects a different five minute past the hourly o’clock time.
- 144 Labels each one with a different five minute past the hourly time, written in words, example 12:05 o’clock.
- Control cards (144), each one displaying an analog clock-face with a different five minute past the hourly o’clock time; and labelled (digitally – in numbers) for the displayed time.
- 144 Labels each one with a different five minute past the hourly time, in numbers, example 12:05.
- a plastic container with a lid
This activity seeks to achieve two different objectives. The direct objective; with practice, the Child learns to tell the time. Indirectly, children improve their vocabulary, numeracy and reading skills and is introduced to division and skip counting.
Note: we sell the clock (in the illustration), separately.
