This is the third of a new range of reading books, the Childrens Readers: Grade 1. These books form part of the Key Links series, aligned to the CAPS curriculum. Capture the children’s interest through these engaging stories e.g. space exploration, service dogs, etc. At this age, the children recognize a large number of words and are keen to increase their knowledge to read more complex stories. Following the realistic, exciting and educational stories, children will increase their level of comprehension, understand what they are reading and so thirst for more knowledge.

These books are suitable for the teacher to read to the class as a whole or to sit with an individual child.

The six books cover a variety of subjects. All the book use true-to-life visuals and are contextually accurate. The titles listed below increase in complexity and range from the early reader to that of the more advanced.

Animal Fathers – introduces the fathers of different animals. These fathers look after their young.
Octopus Mother – describes how hard the mother octopus will go to protect her young.
It Started with a Plant – this book is all about the food chain. Everything that lives needs food.
Super Dog – introduces the concept of people with disabilities who use service animals to help them.
Changing Colors – all about hares who can change the color of their coat depending on the season. This introduces the concept of safety.
Living in Space – this book is about how we live on Earth and how different it is to live in a space station.

The Preview Panel Provides a Prompt

All the books in the Childrens Readers: Grade 1 series, are language rich, with high quality realistic photographs demonstrating the story or theme. The preview panel (on the right hand side of every double page), prompts the teacher to guide the Child as they are reading aloud, thereby focusing on:
