Description
In the Montessori approach to reading, it is not essential to present the Alphabet Cards, both lower case and capital letters, before introducing sentences from the pink reading series. However, these cards do allow children to match lower case letters with their corresponding upper case letters, reinforcing their understanding of letter recognition.
The cards that display both lower and upper case letters serve as a control of error, enabling children to self-correct as they learn. This hands-on activity promotes engagement and supports their learning process.
Phonics instruction plays a crucial role in this environment, as it teaches children the relationship between written letters and the sounds they represent in spoken language. By integrating phonics with letter recognition, children develop a strong foundation for reading skills.
Activities of the Alphabet Cards – Lower Case and Capitals
- a matching exercise:
- shuffle a pile of the lower case letters and place them on mat
- on a 2nd mat, some distance away, place a shuffled pile of the cards with the capital letters
- the Child selects one of the lower case letter cards and searches for the matching upper case letter card and lays them on the floor
- when all 26 letter cards are matched, they check their efforts against the double letter cards
- another exercise is to sound out the upper case letters, without referring to the lower case letter card
