Geometry

“This system in which a child is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses, also takes into account a child’s special aptitude for mathematics.” Maria Montessori, The Discovery of the Child, pg 279

In the Montessori classroom, the study of geometry is a hands-on experience.  Children as young as three get to handle the blue geometric solids, slowly learning the names of each shape.  Admiring the beauty of the products, absorbing the touch and feel, comparing them to everyday objects.  These sensorial feelings never leave the Child.

The Child in the junior elementary (6 to 9) class, discovers the properties of these forms and shapes.  They convert them into the different parts and types of lines, angles, triangles and other shapes.  Relating the shapes, lines and angles to everyday objects.  Moving onto the older (9 to 12) class, the children learn about congruence, similarity and equivalence.
