Mandela Day, our challenge to reduce plastics

July has arrived and with it Mandela Day.  Nelson Mandela is one of the world’s idols, an advocate for Peace; not too dissimilar to Maria Montessori.  Both dedicated their lives to Peace, Justice for all and above all Education as a means to change the world.

An annual international day was adopted by the United Nations, advocating that as of 18th July 2010, Individuals, communities and organisations donate 67 minutes to doing something for others.  This day is to commemorate the 67 years that he gave to the struggle for social justice. The Mandela Day campaign message is “We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation, and cultural diversity” according to a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf

Mandela Day, our challenge to reduce plasticsChildrens House chose our 67 minutes to clean our local wetlands (yes we did ours a little early).  Although our local wetland, Park Island, was reasonably clean, what struck us the most was the number of small plastics: bottle tops, sweet packets, straws that get caught in our wetland reeds, that somehow never gets cleaned up.

Mandela Day, our challenge to reduce plasticsWe discovered at first hand, how surely a ban on single-use plastics must be implemented to prevent these plastics because they get coated in mud and “hidden”, nevertheless, they are still fatal to marine life, and can end up in our own digestive systems.
