Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori

Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori, the vision of Dawn Brochenin, opened it’s doors 15 February 2010 in a 5m rented rondawel. 15 Children (2½ – 5 years), were introduced to the Montessori method of teaching in a stimulating and safe learning environment. Dawn’s sterling efforts at fund-raising extended the school’s reach to provide an education, to 64 children aged 2½ to 6 years of age. This amazing feat was undertaken in one of South Africa’s most poverty stricken areas, but conversely, one of the most beautiful.

Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori - children at work

In 2015, Childrens House took the decision to add Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori to their list of outreach programs. This school is managed by Sustainable Coffee Bay organisation, a registered NPO and PBO. We continue to support them and urge all our valued customers to heed the call of Gill Holder, the current principal of Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori. She writes an open letter to all:

Dear Fellow Montessorians

Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori is a preschool managed by Sustainable Coffee Bay, a registered NPO* and PBO*. We are situated in Jonga Village near Coffee Bay in the rural Eastern Cape (former Transkei).

We impact the lives of 64 isiXhosa children from Jonga and surrounding villages. Our children come from very poor families, where social grants are often the only income these families have. We rely on generous sponsors and funders to cover the monthly expenses for the running of our school.

Our school is 12 years old this year, and we desperately need to replace some very well-worn Montessori materials. We are requesting your assistance to acquire these. If anyone can help fulfill our wish list of Montessori material, it would be greatly appreciated.

We have placed a registry with Childrens House listing the materials needed. If you are interested in supporting us, please contact Sharon at Childrens House to reserve and purchase any item from the material we need – email sharon@childrenshouse.co.za.

A massive Thank You to everyone who’s interested in making a difference in the lives of our rural children. If you have any comments for or queries about Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori, please contact Gill at +27 (0)82 873 5206 (mobile) or ilm@sustainablecoffeebay.org.za (email).

With all our love from all of us at Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori

Gill, Fundiswa, Nokuthula, Noxolo, Nonzame, Vuyokazi, Music and all 64 Labantwana-ans.

Please Note: It is very important that you order through Sharon at Childrens House to reserve and purchase any item you wish to donate, to avoid duplications of products. Sharon will confirm whether the item you are interested in donating is still available.
