Auburn House Montessori School

Grade 4 - 7 Teacher

Kenilworth, Cape Town

The History of Auburn House

Founded 40 years ago by Sally Hall, Auburn House Montessori School, stands as a flagship Montessori institution and training center in South Africa. It is nationally recognized for its unwavering commitment to the highest standards of Montessori philosophy and educational excellence.

The school’s roots trace back to the surge of interest in Montessori education in the Western Cape during the late 1970s. By 1983, overwhelming demand led a dedicated group of families to establish Auburn House, officially signing its constitution in May 1984 under the chairmanship of Ian Sims (then Chairman of BP, SA).

What began as a vibrant pre-primary quickly expanded. Driven by parent demand and a successful enrichment program, the school launched its primary stream in 1988. Following the 1994 change in government, Auburn House formally registered as a primary school, eventually growing to include a full 9–12 years stream.

Beyond its core Montessori tenets, Auburn House is distinguished by its connection to the St. James Schools network and the Education Renaissance Trust (UK), promoting universal values and a “fine education” model. Today, the school occupies an expanded campus on Auburn Road and Hillbrow Circus, producing alumni who consistently flourish in top-tier secondary and tertiary environments.
